Today I went to Allan’s Aquarium Store (a real place! On Lincoln in Venice!) to pick out the first batch of fish for the 20-gallon aquarium my brother, Josh and his wife, Sheila, got on Monday. Going to Allan’s Aquarium Store is so much fun. I love going there. It was the second time this week! That store is my happy place. It is like a tiny little vacation to a mini-aquarium. What a delight!
So anyway, the new fish!
Ursula LeFin, is a Fancy Guppy with an iridescent yellow and white coloring and a beautiful tail. And yes, her name is a pun on the science fiction author Ursula LeGuin, and was a collaborative name choice by the three of us.
Oscar Martinez, who is also a Fancy Guppy and has a beautiful black and white coloring with yet another illustrious tail. He is named after one of Sheila’s favorite characters from her favorite show, The Office.
Duncan Idaho 1 and Duncan Idaho 2 are a pair of identical looking “Tetra” that are named for a character who was regularly cloned in the Dune books. Eventually my brother plans to get at least three more, so then we’ll have Duncan Idahos 3-5. I imagine we’ll eventually just refer to them as The Duncan Idahos. This was a pretty genius name choice thanks to Josh, but only after I prompted him to think of a character who’s a clone (I used Orphan Black as an example, but he was thinking in literary terms), seeing as all these fish look exactly alike. Et voila, Duncan Idaho!
Chicken Nugget, is a Chinese Algae Eater and is the largest of the fish and could possibly get as big as eight inches and was totally freaked out when we dropped in the tank. I was the one who named him Chicken Nugget because I like Chicken Nuggets.
