I really, really, really, REALLY love this look. A lot.
One of the most fun things about living on the West Coast is I feel like the Southwestern style I’ve always somewhat gravitated toward (geometric shapes, denim, turquoise, beads) is totally easy for me to pull off and pull together here. My mom was really into this style and vibe because she went to college in Denver and her Godparents lived in Scottsdale, AZ — and I guess all the time skiing and generally exploring the southwest that both my parents did cultured this real love for the southwest aesthetic in me as well.
My mom’s house in Maine had a kitchen with a huge stripe of pink that ran around the top, and she mom decorated the window sill with chili-pepper lights and almost all our dishes were ones she had made with red clay, which was her practiced art medium. I guess as much as she was a WASP from Long Island she was a total hippie artist too.
It always fascinates me to see how current fashion and style choices can sometimes still be so rooted in a person’s upbringing.

LA: Gilt City Warehouse Sale THIS Saturday!

Hey guys! Wanted to pass this info along for my friend Erin who works at Gilt City in New York and is stoked about this warehouse sale here in LA this weekend. Gilt lovers and all around shopping addicts — this is a must.

I’m in NYC for all of a New York Minute GET IT!?!

home alone and other random things

I’m home alone in Maine recovering from Wedding Number One which has left me exhausted with a sore throat, wanting to do nothing but watch Cheers from the beginning on Netflix streaming, but instead I am pushing through, trying to write and work and prepare for a meeting in New York next week before I come back to LA, after Wedding Number Two this weekend.

My family went back to New York and LA this afternoon (including the newlyweds, my brother and his wife HIS WIFE!). It’s really great being home alone here except two summers ago I had a major visit from three ghosts in my room in the middle of the night and even though I’m into ghosts I could do without a visit when I’m home alone. We’ll see. I’m going to take some NyQuil so let’s just assume everything after 11:30pm EST is a hallucination, just to be safe.

I finally caved and put some stickers on my computer. Three butterflies that I got at the Maine Audubon the day before the wedding.

Hey did you know about this Tumblr queue thing? It’s great! It makes it look like I’m always blogging and churning up stuff on a regular basis when I am so totally not. Fooled you guys.

The lady who’s office I was occupying has returned from vacation and thus I am sitting in my dad’s office, which is where this photo was taken. Some things to note:
My dad is loud. Obviously, we are related. But that means I have to look like an asshole wearing huge headphones to listen to music while I write.
I have lost my tan. This is the thing I hate the most about New York City.
Look at how tired I am. Do you know why? This is because ONE night of drinking/partying in NYC ruins me. That’s all it takes. LA has softened me — I am accustomed to bars closing at 2am and not being able to drink all that much because I often have to drive and early dinners of inexpensive Mexican food and waking up before nine am the next day to go to yoga. If I really did live here permanently I’d either have to form a cocaine habit or become a recluse.
I’m still thinking about how not tan I am.
You can’t see it, but this is actually a sleeveless shirt, that I’m realizing looks a lot like a Ladies Golf polo type-thing (hence my outfit description tweet earlier) except it’s silky-ish and is from Urban Outfitters or something and I’m wearing it with a pair of high-wasted red silk shorts and some beaded Southwestern style belt and I was not thinking much when I got dressed this morning.
So pale.
Don’t let the ladies at those cheap manicure/pedicure salons on Main Street in Santa Monica ever wax your eyebrows because they will still look uneven two months later.

My dad and step-mom (and cat) went back to New York today. It’s just me and my brother at the house in Maine. Now taking wagers on how long it takes until we kill each other and/or burn the house down.

New Yorkers! Check out my friend Jared aka COLD ATLANTIC playing tonight at Webster Hall in NYC! His stuff is good. Like REALLY good. Listen here. Go to the show! I can’t, so go in my stead! DO IT!
