ST. LUCIA - LIVE @ THE ECHO LA - 9.10.13

This past Tuesday night you could barely recognize the Echo. I’ve heard some of my favorite artists play there (Tanlines, Lord Huron, Night Beds, Divine Fits), and I’ve seen the intimate venue’s vibe range from somber to upbeat…but I’ve never seen it as outwardly jovial or, in a word, delighted as it was long before Jean-Philip Grobler stepped onstage to introduce us all to their new album "When The Night". People were swaying even before a finger pressed a single key. People were grinning. And just to reiterate…it was a Tuesday. Who feels that happy on a Tuesday? We hadn’t even reached hump day yet. But we sang aloud to our hearts content. We jumped up and down. People bopped on others shoulders. People CROWD SURFED. At the ECHO.

Because there’s just something about Grobler, his band of merry makers, and the music itself. All of his songs are either about having an amazing time, or feeling nostalgic over good times had. And it’s clear his audience appreciates the same things. He’s the kind of artist who brings everything he’s got to every show he plays, and so his fans do the same. What’s interesting about such a relationship is that it’s far more common in larger venues with more seasoned artists. Grobler has been playing music his whole life, but St. Lucia’s first EP only came out a year ago. So color me impressed. I wish I could do it all over again, and I know I’m not alone in that.

A nice little recap from Lucy about the St. Lucia show at the Echo earlier this week.

Leif Podhajsky does it again with this awesome cover for St. Lucia's upcoming When The Night album, out Oct 8th.

This is going to be a MUST-OWN album. Seriously you guys, if you aren’t already listening to St. Lucia on repeat, then get started.

If You Leave sounds like a plea, from the album title to the fragile sounding and weary songs.  Elena Tonra sings with anguish and broken-down desire throughout these ten songs but as you work through it all with her you realise this is not a plea for help but a cathartic approach to salvation. ”We are the reckless, We are the wild youth” she asserts on the standout track Youth.  Sonically, it reminds me a lot of Sharon Van Etten, a comparison which does Daughter no harm, and thematically it’s a bold and interesting debut record from this London three-piece.

I’ve been OBSESSED with the song “Youth” for the better part of the past six months. There are two versions of it because Daughter released an earlier, more studio version before the one from their current album. Anyway, I’ve probably already shared the song with you guys here, but in case I had it, this is a reminder. It’s beautiful and it will get right into your soul.

FILED UNDER: Grouplove - Ways to Go M/V

The first single off their new album Spreading Rumors, the “Ways to Go” music video by Los Angeles band Grouplove is a celebration of life and an homage to the North Korean regime. Sound contradictory? Trust us, “Ways to Go” is sure to put new pep in your step!

Good jam, good band.

Two birds with one stone here - a new favorite artist covering a new favorite song.

YES. I love Daughter (check out their song “Youth” it is UNREAL), but wow — this cover of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky?” Stunning.

Something New, by See Green

My friend Courtenay is super awesome with a super awesome band that has some new jams out that you guys should check out. Courtenay’s got a very cool voice and sound — different from what I usually like and share, so this might appeal to more people I think (it’s more pop I guess?) and it’s so fun and upbeat. And she’s a LOT of fun to see live. Check out her band See Green!

For a unit that’s long been the model of the archetypal studio band, it’s no surprise that Depeche Mode’s 13th record is another exemplary display of aural wizardry and high production value. (via Depeche Mode: Delta Machine (COLUMBIA) | Under The Radar)

Really, really REALLY excited about this.

Ahead of the April release of their new EP Falling (out on the first of the month), LA-based sisters HAIM let Duke Dumont play around with the riffs of their lead single. (via media | Under The Radar)

I am OBSESSED with Haim. And you guys should be too. They are going to BLOW UP.

First single off the new She & Him album. It’s a cheery delight, and I would expect nothing less — a good song of the day for this rainy Thursday.

Game of Thrones Season 3 Trailer

Okay. This is awesome for two big reasons: 1) Trailer for the third season Game of Thrones, which is going to be nuts 2) The music in the trailer is one of my favorite MS MR songs! I love seeing a band I’m obsessed with getting so much play!
