If You Leave sounds like a plea, from the album title to the fragile sounding and weary songs. Elena Tonra sings with anguish and broken-down desire throughout these ten songs but as you work through it all with her you realise this is not a plea for help but a cathartic approach to salvation. ”We are the reckless, We are the wild youth” she asserts on the standout track Youth. Sonically, it reminds me a lot of Sharon Van Etten, a comparison which does Daughter no harm, and thematically it’s a bold and interesting debut record from this London three-piece.
I’ve been OBSESSED with the song “Youth” for the better part of the past six months. There are two versions of it because Daughter released an earlier, more studio version before the one from their current album. Anyway, I’ve probably already shared the song with you guys here, but in case I had it, this is a reminder. It’s beautiful and it will get right into your soul.
